One of the most recent (relatively so) monuments on the battlefield at Gettysburg is that to the Irish Brigade. It’s located in a quiet stretch of woods near the “wheat field,” site of heavy engagement on the 2nd day of the battle in July 1863. The numbers listed on the Celtic Cross are the three regiments of the brigade.
I have a strong attachment to the Celtic Cross. For me it represents an appropriate balance between Christianity and a reverence for the sacredness of nature. The positive energy of the loving heart is held within the center, as it should be.
If you should visit Gettysburg the monument to the Irish Brigade is a must see. There’s also an Irish Wolfhound who sits at the base of the Cross. Such a symbol of mercy and grace in a place where for a few days, nearly 150 years ago, witnessed so much pain, death and horror. But indeed it passed and peace prevailed.
